BACK TO BASICS
Our Saturday August 17 tournament will be individual stroke play,
gross and net. This l8 hole contest will feature an Open, Senior
(50 -64) and Super Senior (65 to I can’t believe I’m still playing)
divisions. The youngsters will play from the Blue tees. The
geriatric divisions will ease it out there from the White tees.
A valid USGA handicap is a must unless you enjoy playing at scratch.
All this action can be yours for a $20 check payable to CCMGA.
The entry deadline is Sunday August 11.
WERE YOU RIGHT?
In match play it is possible to win by a score of 13 and 11.
Here’s how. Player A wins the first seven holes. In the course
of those holes, Player B uses more than 14 clubs, violates the
local rule regarding the use of only one brand and type of ball
during a stipulated round and uses a cart when conditions of play
prohibit riding. In each case, one hole is deducted from the score
for each hole at which a breach occurred (with a maximum deduction
of two holes per round). Golf Journal/Dec-Nov.2002
DISCOUNT SUSPENDED
Apparently feeling CCMGA members were getting a benefit other public
links golfers were not, city auditors recently eliminated our 20%
pro shop discount. However, the Golf Division of Parks and Rec. is
still hoping some type of compromise can be worked out. Meanwhile,
keep in mind that most of the items in the shop have been discounted
already, and they generally will meet a lower advertised price.
Mark and the shop staff work closely with CCMGA on tournaments and
other matters, and they have earned our support. Keep in mind, too,
they weren’t the ones who eliminated the discount.
LOOKING FOR...
the names of past Club Champions. Seems there once was a trophy
with the names on it, but it can’t be found. Plans are underway
to replace it with a plaque with room for the names of all our
Club Champions. Scratch your heads, particularly you long-time
members, and see if you can come up with a valid name and the year
he won. Maybe someone even has an old list or the trophy stashed
in his garage. In any event, if you have a name or names, please
drop them in an envelope marked 'Club Championship Trophy' and
leave it in the pro shop.
SECRET'S OUT!
Why is called the Razz or RAZZ, if you prefer? Barry Bevec, a
veritable treasure trove of club lore, says he knows. No, he will
tell you, the letters aren’t an acronym for 'Rattlesnakes Always
Zig Zag.' It’s the word itself that holds the key, he assures us.
In the early days, it was common, he said, to hear such
inspirational words as "Do you always close your eyes before you
swing?" or "Does your husband play?" or "Your last shot looked
like an Elephant’s ass, it was high and it stunk." You get the
picture. The razzing became so prolific that someone, no one
remembers whom, said, in frustration, "This isn’t golf, it’s a
razz." That’s Barry’s story, and he’s stuck with it. The editor
will give equal time to any member who has another version of
how it became the Razz.
COOL MAN, COOL
With each passing triple digit day, the Prescott away tournament
on August 3 looks better and better.
There is still room, and time, to enter this two man best ball.
See the entry blank for more details.
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
There’s a lot more to ccmga.net than the Forum and tournament
scores. Click on Golf Encyclopedia. Here you’ll find a
wealth of information about handicaps, rules and other aspects
of the game all avid golfers should know. You can also stay
in touch with local, national and international golf doings
at the same site. Try it, you’ll like it.
DESERT GREENER
Have you noticed all the new trees sprouting up around the course?
Bob Lytle says most of them have been donated by Moon Valley
Nursery. Mighty neighborly wouldn’t you say?
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT
"On the golf course, a man may be the dogged victim of inexorable
fate, be struck down by an appalling stroke of tragedy, become
the hero on an unbelievable melodrama, or the clown in a
side-splitting comedy - any of these within a few hours,
and all without having to bury a corpse or repair a tangled
personality." Robert Tyre Jones
