Note: Tournament dates for all Phoenix Municipal Courses are allotted
by the Golf Division of Parks and Rec. and are fixed. However, the
2007 Board of Governors has the option to change the types of
tournaments played, and the order in which they are played. Any
changes will be reported to the membership promptly.
A SALUTE TO OUR CHAMPIONS
To our 2006 President's Cup winner, Angelito Pangan who put a torrid first
round 76 together with a second round 84 for a net total 132 to pace the field.
To our 2006 Club Champion, Marc Horwitz, whose gross one under par 143 took
the title by a two stroke margin. Few members spend as much time honing
their games as Marc does, and it paid off with a "major" victory this year.
Both winners' names have been inscribed on the respective tournament plaques
in the grill.
CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Nine members are vying for the four seats to be filled on the 2007 Board of
Governors. They are:
Frank Covello, Jim Dame, Jim Denmark, Dave Hoefer, Ken Kerner, Sal Magnolo,
Brian Metheny, Ward McAllister and Arnie Reah.
Current CCMGA members in good standing may cast an absentee ballot or vote
in person at our Annual Meeting and Banquet on November 17.
Absentee ballots will be available at our Ballot Box in the pro shop, and
on our website, ccmga.net. All absentee ballots must be placed in the Ballot
Box by 5:00 PM Wednesday, November 15 to be counted. No exceptions will be made.
FOURTH QUARTER TOURNAMENTS
Jubilation and exasperation are hallmarks of our annual ABCD Hot Ball Scramble
to be held on Saturday, October 28. On each hole, one player will be designated
as the "Hot Ball" player, and his net score will be added to the three player
scramble score for the team's total score on that hole. For more details see
the entry form in the CCMGA box in the pro shop or ccmga.net.
Always hotly contested, our Two Man Team Championship, our last "major" of
the year, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19. Again,
a reminder that all players in our "major" tournaments …."must have within
the past 12 months, played in at least two official CCMGA tournaments in which
the scores were posted for handicap purposes. If you are in doubt about
your eligibility, contact Craig Munsey, our Handicap Chairman, at camldm@msn.com.
RAZZ events are not considered official tournaments.
Our annual Member/Guest – Member/Member Tournament will be held on Saturday,
December 16. When entry forms are available, we suggest you get yours in early
to avoid being on the standby list. As an added incentive, all players will
receive a free gift from the association. It's also a great opportunity to
introduce potential new members to CCMGA. Of the more than 100 new members
we had this year, several joined after playing in last year's M/G-MM.
WORTH REPEATING
Junior Golf was the big winner in the 50/50 Raffle held during the Club
Championship. After the last winning ticket was paid, we were able to write
a check for $486 to an organization that introduces any interested youngster
to the game. Not a lot of money, you say? Then consider that last year our
putting and driving contests netted only $134 for Junior Golf. Our thanks
to all who shelled out for a very worthy cause.
STILL A BARGAIN
You'll pay a heck of a lot more for a decent putter, but $70, will still pay
your 2007 CCMGA annual dues. That's the same amount golfers have paid to
belong to CCMGA for at least the past five years, and this year's Board voted
to make it six.
You can renew now for next year by filling out a membership application blank
available in the CCMGA box in the pro shop, or on ccmga.net. Applications, and
someone to take your check, also will be available at our Annual Meeting and
Banquet on November 17.
An important reminder – any member who has not renewed his membership by
December 31 will be dropped from the rolls, and will be unable to post scores
in 2007 until his dues are paid.
CCMGA RETAINS SARGEANT'S CUP.
The record shows that CCMGA's Board defeated the Cave Creek Staff 7 to 5 in
this three day event that uses a modified Ryder Cup format.
What the official record doesn't show is that all the matches were played
the way golf was meant to be played – a blend of competitive fire and respect
for your opponents. A spirit of camaraderie was evident from the first tee
until the final putt was holed. Captains Buffy Labombarde and Tom McConnell
said the matches reflected the cooperative climate that exists between the
entire Cave Creek staff and CCMGA. Both also agreed it is a formula for
success that is worth preserving year after year.
The matches are named in honor of the late Chuck Sergeant, a member of the
original Cave Creek Pro Shop staff.
COURSE CONDITIONING
Overseeding officially got underway on Oct 2. Acting Superintendent,
Mark Derbes, reports the course should be playable by Oct 14.
As every Arizona golfer knows, the vagaries of our weather make a successful
overseeding a risky business at best.
As one local superintendent put it, overseeding "includes prayer, finger
crossing and lots of irrigation."
Mark, we can't provide the irrigation, but consider our collective fingers
crossed – all 904 of them.
We assure you that the much cursed cart path in the middle of number 8 fairway
is gone. The re-sodding is complete. There is no need to "take a look" from your
cart. Please give the grass a chance to grow by keeping carts away from the
re-sodded areas. Think "scatter" when coming down that fairway.
2007 ENCANTO CUP
CCMGA will defend its title on Saturday, June 16 when Cave Creek hosts these
matches.
"ACTION CENTRAL"
The traditional Two Man Team Championship "Pickum" Event will be held on Friday,
November 17 at our Annual Meeting and Banquet. All teams will be in play when
the action gets underway following the election of new board members.
YOU'RE THE GREATEST
High fives and a chest bump or two are due all 452 CCMGA members. Collectively,
you have helped make our association a respected and growing member of the
Phoenix golf community.
Tournament participation continues to grow. Your recruiting efforts helped us
attract nearly twice as many new members as we did last year. You volunteered
when called on. Junior Golf benefited from your donations of equipment and funds.
Thank you for making 2006 a most successful year. We look forward to seeing
your name on our roster in 2007.
