2006 RETROSPECTIVE
On behalf of the 2006 board, our thanks to every member for supplying the momentum
that was the key to CCMGA's success in 2006. You made the following numbers possible.
At year end we had 470 members, the highest number we have had since 2002.
Unfortunately, membership records beyond that date are no longer available.
I encourage the 2007 Membership Committee to take a shot at hitting 500 before
year end.
Our members played 1337 rounds of tournament golf, all at Cave Creek plus one
round at Prescott CC. That's an average of nearly 103 players for each tournament.
Thursday Razz rounds for the year totaled 4819, or just shy of 95 players per round.
Along the way we brought the Encanto Cup back to Cave Creek; the Board defeated the
Cave Creek staff to take the Sergeant's Cup; we more than doubled our contribution
to Junior Golf and funded the new concrete curbing around the putting green.
We salute the staff for creating an atmosphere of good will that makes us proud to
call Cave Creek our home course.
Gary Van Slyke, President, 2006.
OUTLOOK FOR 2007
Thanks to all of our members for helping to make the Cave Creek Men's Golf
Association something to be proud of. We will continue to make our tournaments
as appealing to the membership as a whole as we possibly can. We will continue
our tradition of helping Junior Golf, and we will continue helping with course
improvements where we can. We will continue to strengthen the spirit of
cooperation between CCMGA and the Cave Creek staff.
We are always open to suggestions for improvement, so feel free to contact any
of our Board members with your comments. Just click on "Go Direct" on our
website, ccmga.net, or button hole us anytime you see us at the Creek.
Allen Sadberry, President 2007
RAZZ ON THE RISE
Whatever the season, the RAZZ tee sheet showed very good numbers in 2006. And
a large share of the credit goes to head pro, Buffy Labombarde. As the RAZZ
Administrator, he helped make the RAZZ an enjoyable experience from sign in
to the timely, accurate posting of the results. Just another example of the
fine, and much appreciated cooperation CCMGA enjoys with the Cave Creek staff.
YOU'RE INVITED
CCMGA is not a closed shop. There's too much to do for that kind of nonsense.
Every committee chairman you see listed on the front page will probably need
some volunteer help this year.
And that's where you come in. Don't wait to be invited. If you'd like to help
out on a particular committee, or have an idea for a better mousetrap, just
contact the chairman. He'll be happy to hear from you. Just click on "Go Direct"
on our website, ccmga.net
Would you like to attend a board meeting? You are welcome to sit in. Regular
meetings are held on Wednesday evenings following a tournament. Please contact
the executive secretary at ogbadger@aol.comfor time and place.
ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE.
Whatever your reasons were for joining CCMGA, they are the best selling tools we have.
No poster can tout our tournaments, our Thursday RAZZ, or our affordable $70 dues
better than a member can. Word of mouth can be a powerful sales tool, and a big
assist in our membership recruiting efforts this year. As thought starters we've
listed some other basic membership benefits below.
*Membership in the Arizona Golf Association which gives you an official USGA handicap
and a free quarterly magazine.
*A quarterly newsletter and E-mail updates throughout the year.
*Access to our website, ccmga.net, where you will find tournament results and entry
forms, member's directory, members forum, world wide golf news and links to other
golf websites.
*An annual banquet at no extra cost.
*The fellowship of other golfers with like interests.
RANGE FINDER REMINDER
Those new range finders you received for Christmas probably have more bells and
whistles than a computer. In addition to distance there's green contours, elevation
changes, wind direction, club selection, angle of the sun and temperature. OK,
we exaggerated a little. The point is the USGA has made it very clear that in
tournament play range finders can be used ONLY to measure distance. All other
features must be turned off or not used.
DIVOT DIVIDENDS
Mark Derbus, Acting Superintendent, offers this divot repair doubleheader. If
your divot is in one piece, replace it carefully and tamp it down so it is level
with the nearby fairway grass. If it is in shreds, place sand in the divot mark
making sure the sand is smooth and level with the nearby fairway. Why smooth and
level? Because the next ball that heads for your old divot will have a better
chance of rolling over it to the grass.
Don't take a divot? Then while waiting to hit find some nearby divots and repair
them. It will be appreciated by your fellow golfers, and make you forget how you
blew that two-footer for a birdie on the last hole.
IN MEMORIUM
For those who may have missed the earlier E-mail update, long time member,
Tom Balliet, passed away on December 24 following a long illness. He was 81
years old. CCMGA extends its sympathy and prayers to his wife, Sara, his
family and friends.
His wife, Sara, called him "a classy guy." We agree. Tom will be missed.
PHOENIX CARD
Renewals for 2007 are available for $30. For new card holders the rate is $50
which includes a free Phoenix golf cap and a complimentary round at time of purchase.
Good year round, this versatile card offers discount green fees, preferred tee times
and frequent player and Internet discounts.
Happy new year to all – may the birdies be many, the bogeys few!
