CCMGA Board Wins First Sergeant Cup Matches
The annual Ryder Cup style matches between the CCMGA Board and Cave Creek
staff members were held on March 22, 23 and 24 with the teams representing
the Board prevailing 9 to 7. Friday's alternate shot matches were halved 2
and 2. The Board's margin of victory came on Saturday with a 3 to l win
over the Cave Creek teams in best ball competition. Sunday's individual
matches were halved 4 and 4. The 2002 winners will receive the "Sergeant
Cup" named in honor of the late Chuck Sergeant, a member of the original
Cave Creek staff. Board team captain Jim Denmark and Cave Creek captain
Mark Campbell agreed all the matches were hard fought, and the margins of
victory very close. Both are looking for a spirited renewal of these
matches in 2003.
The Forum Revisited
Last month's newsletter was not meant to be anti-Forum. We hope all
members will use it to ask questions or get important issues before
the Board. We just wanted you to know that there were alternatives
available to you to get your message heard. The Board will only
respond to comments signed by the writer.
What's a "Bogey Rating."
First, it's one of the USGA's best kept secrets. For years when a course
rating team rated a golf course, they analyzed yardage and obstacles to
predict the scores of two types of golfers, scratch AND bogey. However,
for one reason or another, the bogey ratings were never published until
now. To give bogey golfers a better view of how they are playing Cave Creek
relative to their handicaps, here are the course bogey ratings. For 18 holes
from the blue tees: 92.9. For l8 holes from the white tees: 89.3. When
posting only a nine hole score the bogey ratings are: Blue Tees, front nine,
47.1. Back nine, 46.7. White Tees, front nine 45.l. Back nine, 45.1`.
All this information is already part of the GHIN posting system, so all you
need to do is post your score, the date, the tees played and whether you
played nine or l8 holes. The computer in the Pro Shop will do the rest.
Contact Peter Barnett, Handicap Chairman, if you have questions. The bogey
ratings will be posted in the Pro Shop, and shown on the score cards when
they are re-printed. More information on bogey ratings can be found on
page 24 of the March/April edition of "Arizona, The State of Golf" which
all Association members receive from the AGA. DID YOU KNOW? Rounds played
with non-conforming clubs and balls violate the Rules of Golf and are not
acceptable for USGA handicap purposes. The USGA's list of non-conforming
driving clubs, which is updated weekly, and a list of balls that conform
to the Rules, are available on the Association's web site, www.usga.org.
"BOOK MONEY" Change
Head Pro, Mark Campbell, reports that beginning in May, the Pro Shop will no
longer keep track of the "book money" won in tournaments. Instead, winners
will be given a certificate for the amount won which can be used for Pro Shop
merchandise. Certificates also will be issued for the amounts currently on the
"books." These certificates should be available in the Pro Shop sometime in
April, Mark said.
PROVISIONALS
Please note that tournament scores and tournament applications are now being
posted separately on our web site. We hope this will give you more timely
access to both items. It will also give us more space in our newsletter for
a greater variety of Association happenings.
IT'S UP TO YOU!
The editor is indebted to Steve Clarke, chairman of the Golf Committee at
Moon Valley CC, for these words on a golfer's handicap responsibilities:
"The entire basis of our game is summed up in one word - INTEGRITY - and
it isn't possible to have a little integrity. You either have it or you
don't have it at all..... Remember...'managing' your handicap is cheating,
and if you are cheating, you are cheating yourself and your friends."
